Kids learn painting kites in Shandong
Yang Weihong, a representative inheritor of Weifang kites, brought her works to kids of the weekly Shandong intangible culture heritage classroom on June 9 in Jinan, capital of Shandong province.
At the beginning of the course, Yang introduced the historical development and cultural implications of kites and showed some of her works to the kids.
The kids were very familiar with kites because they used to fly them a lot, but it was the first time they could design their own kites.
All the children were interested in the course and eager to display their painting talents.
"Printed products are not intangible heritage, and children can not understand the significance of the inheritance without a more hands on approach," said Yang.
"That's why I am teaching them to paint their own kites today".
Organized by the Shandong Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, the classroom has been open every Saturday since last year in a bid to introduce and teach the province's intangible cultural heritages to kids.
Every course is taught by a state or provincial level intangible cultural inheritor and children between 6 and 12 can sign up for the classes.
